The next time we think to rip Terrell Owens, Manny Ramirez or any professional athlete for an act of selfishness and defiance, we should remind ourselves of what just happened to Brett Favre.
He was overthrown in Green Bay because he tried to play nice, attempted to accommodate the very bosses who plotted his coup d'etat.
In February and early March, when Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy pressured Favre for a retirement decision by pretending the Packers couldn't move forward without knowing Favre's 2008 status a month before the draft, four months before training camp and five months before kickoff, that's when Brett should've played the Favre-being-Favre card.
"I'm Brett Favre. I've played quarterback in Green Bay for 16 years. I don't miss games. I'll announce my 2008 plans when I'm good and ready. I'll be in Mississippi hunting and fishing. Don't call me. I'll call you."
Rather than a tearful, forced goodbye in March, long before the emotions of a heartbreaking loss to the Giants had subsided, Favre should've told Packers management that he'd earned the right to be incredibly selfish and do what's right for Brett.

But coaches, with ample assistance from the media, specialize in brainwashing athletes that they should always do what's best for the team while the organization never considers what's best for the athlete.

So Brett, in a moment of weakness, bought the b.s. that the Packers couldn't win in September unless they knew what Brett was going to do in March. Yeah, Mike McCarthy's train left last winter and it can't slow down this summer to pick up Brett Favre, a three-time league MVP, the MVP runner-up last season.

But Jon Gruden, Lovie Smith, Brad Childress and Eric Mangini were all willing to back up their trains to take on Brett Favre's baggage. The Jets plan on letting Favre power their train deep into the playoffs this season.

Someone is lying, and it's not Brett Favre, a man so media-friendly and naively transparent that he poured his heart out to Greta Van Susteren, Chris Mortensen, Peter King, Ed Werder, Wendi Nix and Oprah Winfrey.

I'm joking about Oprah. But there's still time for him to sort this whole mess out on The Couch.

If it happens, I hope I'm invited. I get the feeling Brett still hasn't put it together how Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy ran him out of the franchise and state he owned for nearly two decades.

Thompson and McCarthy are superior at office politics. Following a 13-3 regular season and a run to the NFC Championship, they both quickly inked five-year contract extensions and decided it was the perfect time to play hardball with an iconic quarterback who spent too much time campaigning for Randy Moss rather than pointing the spotlight toward Thompson's and McCarthy's brilliance.

You've seen this on your job. It goes on in every workplace.

New bosses come in and they look for their opportunity to diminish anything that happened before they arrived and champion their hires.

Ted Thompson drafted Aaron Rodgers in 2005, and a year later while ignoring Favre's calls for Steve Mariucci, he hired McCarthy to lead the Packers.

Thompson desperately wants Rodgers to be the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.

Thompson and McCarthy don't get credit for Brett Favre's success. And as long as Favre was in Green Bay, Thompson and McCarthy could never be viewed the way Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli or Bill Walsh and Eddie Debartolo are.

Brett Favre is going down in history by himself. Mike Holmgren and Ron Wolf will get mentions at Favre's Hall of Fame induction. Thompson and McCarthy want to write their own history, and they want to do it now while the Packers have on paper "the best young roster in the league."

So Aaron Rodgers can do no wrong in their eyes. His fragile body, weak resume and shoddy performance in a recent scrimmage can all be explained away. He's Thompson's first hire, the new employee with the freedom to do whatever the hell he wants.

I know you've seen this on your job.

Favre was completely outflanked politically inside Packers headquarters. Thompson has been laying the ground work for Favre's ouster for three years. Favre spends the offseason and every free moment bunkered in Mississippi away from the "office."

Thompson, McCarthy and team president Mark Murphy see each other and talk constantly in Green Bay. They can form a circle of jerks at anytime and tell each other how great they are. They've talked so much they really believe they're better off without Brett Favre, and they think Rodgers, with the right help, can do what Favre did a season ago.

Good luck with it. I hope it blows up in their faces.

Management  as a whole, in the last couple decades have changed. This type of a change is unwarranted and they are telling us....YES, US the fans that we do NOT matter to them. Yes I know Brett retired....again....I dont give a #!*&.....changing ones mind is human nature....YES just like YOU......the point being that if we take away what matters to them the most we, THE FANS can change this so it never happens again. They wont listen to our voices.....lets give them ACTIONS......or lack of. I am not against the Packers, I am against what the three of them just did, and how dare them think they are so high and mighty they can blow off our questions, throw Brett away like an old dishrag and take over OUR ORGANIZATION. do you all get it??????
Us going to the games gives them .....WHAT THEY WANT!!!! I dont condone their behavior, and I want back the "love" for my team, .Why would we support this if we were true Packer fans.  I refuse to move on acting like nothing is wrong.  For what? Self gratification of having something to do on a sunday? Costing me a fortune ? Until they make the efforts to do RIGHT FOR ONCE......I will not support their livelihood. ...Being there offers them our support, I do not support them or stand by the decisions or the treatment they felt was OK......IT WAS NOT OK.

I just read an article on Yahoo, painful as it was, but there are points there that when you sit from the outside looking in, seems as if McCarthy and friends used the fact that the Vikings have been our rivals and the fact that Favre desired to go there as well as has friends there........looks like the organization drummed up the charges fiasco to ruin his chances of going there. The article actually says that McCarthy purposely was talking him down......off wanting to go to the Vikings......FOR SIX HOURS.
Anybody else read this or something like this?

Anybody watching this?  What a farce, all three of them....."we're hearing interest of disclosure why are you trying to hide that, it';s a piece of the puzzle"  Mike becomes very nervous and says he is trying to protect his team and it's irrelevent"   What is he hiding??????  All three talk no sense what so ever!!!

It is very unfortunate that politics have made their way into our once
down to earth , all about football, loving family. This to me is right
where The Packers History ENDS. Lombardi, and company NEVER would have
put up with this and allowed the trampoling and mistreatment of Brett
in this manner. And certainly all would have been quiet until an
agreement were reached.....if that even would have been necessary.
UNBELIEVABLE, JUST UNBELIEVABLE.

I am getting a  bit concerned as to why Goodell is "sitting " on it, when that is exactly what he told the organization NOT to do? What the heck is going on here. Doesnt he realize that his reinstating Brett is the very thing that will FORCE this ball to roll?

Bribery.......looking more and more like a personal issue between Ted and Brett.  The truth always comes out.....this isnt gonna be good. I cant believe that the team players are being silenced along with even the coach being unable to "talk".  So now they have taken the approach "We dont want him, but nobody else can have him either"  so now that this is out, pretty obvious the organization wants Brett to disappear......but why?  I could understand  much better if they would just release him or trade him.  If this was truly just a "we are moving forward" goal BUT......this bribery adds a new twist that cannot be denied. Very scary days to come.

I have to ask? Because I dont have enough fact here but in trying to make sense of throwing a legend in the garbage......Did Ted Thompson make a promise he couldnt keep and now fears looking the ass. Is this one of those situations like he looks like an ass either way?  Did he make a promise to Aaron and found himself wishing and hoping that Brett would leave so he didnt have to worry about his image to Aaron anymore? Did he sigh the big sigh of relief when Brett came on to retire and that is why they are forcing Brett to stick to his decision where no other athlete in the world of sports who has retired has ever been treated this way? Especially one who is so PROOVEN???? WORTHY????   I am so confused and am having a hard time understanding why or how they could do this to Brett. Is this a Ted worried about not living up to his word and is so self centered that the only thing he is worried about is his reputation with Aaron Rodgers? Is he so self centered he cant even think about the damage his actions are causing Brett, Green Bay Packers, the fans, the community, the entire globe? Does he not realize that the Packers have fans all over the entire world and that some of that is because of Brett? Has he forgotten the pattern of Brett over the past 17 years? HELP!!!!!  Facts only please.

Something stinks that is for sure, opinion as it may be , I dont feel that after 17 years Brett needs to prove himself. And for the throne that he has built for himself, our town, our team, I cant believe anyone would ever consider benching him AND BE COMFORTABLE WITH THAT.. Keep in mind all, after researching the facts, check out how many "I am retiring" comebacks there are in football history. After a long and tiring season,  being pressured to give an answer....(patience is a virtue) on a life altering detail, some are screaming "WELL.....Brett said......."  Has anyone been human enough to experience a MISTAKE?????  How can someone who loves his team, his town, and football , THE WAY BRETT DOES  be expected to make a decision and force him to keep it ....HANDS DOWN???? Honestly, how much time does it take a coach to prove himself to a city owned team? And who is Ted? They are working for the CITY......Brett , however , is our family and I am sad that anyone would look at Brett any other way. Does anyone remember how broken hearted we all were when Brett presented us with the decision we all hounded him for, along with management? How sad.

I have been watching Packer games for 30 years. I remember going to the bar and bets were being placed as to how many points we would lose by. The situation right now warrants a reminder, a reminder of the team we would still have if it werent for Brett and the many others that stuck themselves out there to bring us the best football team we could remember. They gave us reason to be "egotistical". I am finding, to my horror, that yes, there are fair weathered fans out there, and now they are showering Brett with that same trait. I won't let any of you forget how Brett changed our team, not just for me.....BUT YOU!!!
