With the resent traggic accident involving a drunk driver that killed two young adults. The media hype states that it is because of a intoxicated driver. I would like to know what kind and the severity of injuries these two young women would have received following these two other situations. What would have happened if the intoxicated driver would have been driving the speed limit of 30mph when she hit them? What would have happened to the two young women if the woman that hit them would have been sober and traveling at the same speed which was 80--90mph? Everybody thinks that this problem can be solved with one simple solution when it is not a simple problem!

I understand what you are saying but remember she was intoxicated, and maybe by the media doing their job some young person will think twice before getting behind a wheel after drinking.

Young people may think twice about bad driving if there was more done about it. People feel and know that they can drive in any bad habit they want at any time or place without recourse till it is too late. And if they know they can drive this way sober they feel that they still are capable intoxicated. When having problems with anything it is time to go back to the basics. If we are having problems with DUI's maybe the police should be ticketing everything and maybe people will think twice about driving while intoxicated.

Way to go deerejohn2001. I agree with you 100%. I think the police should do the 3 strikes your out with drunks also. I have had 2 friends and a boyfriend killed by drunks. I have no use for them and they should suffer in jail like the criminals they are. I would gladly pay more taxes just to have more cops on the road going after these lowlifes.

The first respondent did not read enough into my comments and you read a little too much. It is not just geared to drunk drivers with ticketing all the laws. It also goes to our youth. When the youth get involved in an accident the media says it is because of their age. Our youth see so much traffic violations not being ticketed, they feel that t6hey can drive the same way. It simply amazes me that adults are angered by the youth not saying please and thanks you, but are not appalled that these same courtesies are not enforced while they drive. No tailgating using signal lights and such.

My comment on this situation would be an extremely complicated jumble of thoughts because there is no right or wrong answer on how to best curb an issue such as drunken driving. I think kids today are far smarter than we give them credit for, and don't seem to take the same risks that grown adults do at times. Perhaps a case of experience fostering oblivion, but I also think that no matter waht you do, there will always be intelligent people who simply don't care or refuse to learn. I think the 3 strikes rule with regards to this issue is needed, way too many people get busted 5 and 6 times and continue to offend. I would agree to in-car breath-alizers for anyone busted even the first time, and I would also say that repeat offending bars should be held somewhat responsible even more than they already can be. It is a very complex issue, but the bottom line is this, our roads need to be safe, not just for our teenage sons and daughters, but for ourselves as well.

Yes it is a very complicated issue. I how ever would not find bar owners and bartenders at fault. The patrant to tender ratio is larger and getting larger thanks to the government. About 10 to 15 years ago a show called 20/20 did a story on holding bartenders accountable. The reporter and other did a one on one test and served nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages. They could not properly that way it is impossible to tell the other way. But it simply amazes me that when the police use the same reasoning for why they can catch enough of all illegal acts it is a different story. Maybe if enough people continue to talk and work at many different solutions other than what they keep trying the same thing that isn't working will there be change.
