Who need's a boat? when you have POODLE POWER!
It is Sunday and a good day to take a look at these pictures. There have been a number of satellite photos making the rounds through e-mails, this a series I had not seen. The views with names of familiar locations were especially interesting to me. And of course, the beauty is awesome.

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are "limbs," therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, "Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg." (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint)

As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term "big wig." Today we often use the term "here comes the Big Wig" because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.

In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The "head of the household" always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the "chair man." Today in business, we use the expression or title "Chairman" or "Chairman of the Board."

Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, "mind your own bee's wax." Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term "crack a smile". In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . . . therefore, the expression "losing face."

Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the "Ace of Spades." To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead.
Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't "playing with a full deck."

Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV ' s or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to "go sip some ale" and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. "You go sip here" and "You go sip there." The two words "go sip" were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term "gossip."

At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in "pints" and who was drinking in "quarts," hence the term "minding your

One more: bet you didn't know this!
In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with 16 round indentations.
However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys." Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey." (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you.)

I have not written much lately, because we have all been under the weather here. But I found this quote, and I found it quite interesting. "Justice without strength is helpless, strength without justice is tyrannical. Unable to make what is just, strong. We have made what is strong... just.

With fairly reasonable temperatures this is the winter to go sledding, skiing and all the other outdoor winter sports. I am a Mom and my sons and husband usually do the snow-blowing. I will make a path in the backyard for myself to go all the way to the back. My dogs like to go to the border of our yard to do their business so I have my doo container back there and my handy pooper scooper. I pick it all up daily and with my work shoes on sometimes I need to have a path in order not to get my shoes soaked. I am luck enough to go home for my lunchtime and I let my dogs out then. My Shih Tzu's have little bladders and they are so happy to see me then. I have really enjoyed this winter with the tree branches laden with snow and all. I think everyone in blog-land knows someone in Wisconsin that personally has had car trouble or driven into a ditch this year. My husband is an excellent driver but he works out in Denmark and the roads in the country this winter are real slick. He did drive our truck into a ditch and had to be pulled out. A lot of his co workers had the same fate. This is a good winter for parents of little sledders to make hot chocolate for your little troopers when they come in all rosy faced and soaking wet. I remember those times at my Gram's home. We would all line up and climb aboard a huge toboggan. The hill seemed gigantic back then. I had my own sled with the steel runners you could sit and steer with your feet. Going speedy down the hill and flying over a bump to land without crashing was our goal back then. We then would all go to Gram's as her home was real close to the hill. My Gram always had hot cocoa on the stove ,the real homemade kind! I would be all excited and happy. My Gram would usually be pulling hot muffins out or freshly baked cookies. It was fantastic.
WINTER STORM GRACE: What a difference 60 miles makes. Around the Green Bay area we picked up a few tenths of an inch of snow while 60 miles away, parts of Sheboygan County will end up with nearly a foot. I got an e-mail from Ben at "The Point" radio in Sheboygan this morning describing the conditions like this: "In my 15 years in radio...I've never seen this before. You can't see across the street. EVERYTHING is closed." There was a real big drop off in snowfall amounts with this storm as it pushed through Illinois this morning. Now we have to deal with the very strong winds. Gusts of more than 40 mph are being reported at this hour (11 am). If you're heading out this afternoon be prepared for powerful winds and "feels like" temperatures in the single digits.
THE BOYS: I can't believe it but Henry is turning 2 this Friday. He's become extremely independent lately. In fact he won't let you do anything for him. One of his favorite expressions is "I do it, I do it"..."Don't help me, Don't help me" He doesn't really understand his birthday yet but his older brother Jake does. He's looking forward to having more toys he can take away from Henry.
Hold on to your hat and I'll talk with you tomorrow on Good Day Wisconsin
It's about time I'm updating my blog. Sorry for the extended period of "bloglessness "(I think that's a word I just made up, no need to google it). Are you driving to the southern part of the state tonight or tomorrow? You may want to re-think it if you are because that major winter storm is now making an appearance.
WINTER STORM: It still looks like the highest snow totals will be around the Milwaukee and Madison area where they may get a foot by tomorrow afternoon. The latest indications from the weather computer models brings about 3 inches in the Green Bay area with 3 to 5 inches around Appleton and 5 to 8 inches from Oshkosh through Fond du Lac and Sheboygan. These are bigger numbers than in previous runs so it looks like we'll have to get the snow throwers out again after this one clears. If this holds up we'll name the Winter Storm tonight at 5 pm. The next one is named "Grace" in case you're keeping track.
A LOT OF SNOW ALREADY: Yes it has been snowy. So far this year we've already surpassed our seasonal normal for snowfall in Green Bay. The norm is 53 inches and we've seen more than 57 inches and it's only the beginning of February. The record for one season is 77.5 inches set in 1995-96. I think we have a legitimate shot at it.
Have a great day and I'll talk to you tomorrow on Good Day Wisconsin!

I am a parent and two of my boys go to high school. I am glad they got to stay home from school as when I went out this morning to let my little Shih Tzu's go; they were freezing fast! I shoveled to my car and the back steps. The dogs hop around with one leg up in the air when they get cold. Sometimes I will carry them in. I was glad when they were done and we went back inside. My youngest son fell on our back steps yesterday and he had his heavy backpack on so it made the fall worse. He hit two steps with his tailbone real fast. He called me as I was already at work and I could tell from his voice he was in pain. I told him to put an ice pack on it and rest. I called the school and checked on him all morning till I went home for lunch. He was still in alot of pain. I made an appointment for later on today. I don't think its broke but I don't know how he is going to go to school and sit and then go up and down stairs. My son is a big boy already taller than me and my husband. I heard that it will not be above 2 today and the winds make it feel like thirty six below right now. My older son works for Time Warner Cable. They gave him carharts to wear and alot of cold weather clothing so I know he will be ok.
more soon: off to get a hot cup of chocolate.
I found a link on a blog which stated "How To Win 'Guess Who' In One Move" and was curious how that was possible. I had heard of how to win chess in 3 moves (I always forget how though haha) but how do you win 'Guess Who' in only one?!? I thought about it and I couldn't think of one characteristic that only one face had that the rest didn't. So I clicked on the link and discovered "How To Win 'Guess Who' In One Move" was a video, I watched it and was surprised.
Now don't click on the upcoming link if you still want to remember 'Guess Who' as you remembered it when you were young or you still want to play the game someday. Haha. I was amazed by how easy that game can be now that I watched the video "How To Win 'Guess Who' In One Move."
Crazy huh?
Now...if you watched the video please read on... if not, well thanks for reading but the remaining blog will be my random thoughts on the funny video and my opinion on the question "Are kids over thinking or not?"
Anyway, as I said before, I thought about it and as a child I don't think I thought about whether or not there was a black woman, Anne, or not. Maybe I knew but just don't remember? As a child how great is it to not think about the color of someone's skin and their race. As a child we can be so innocent and see people for who they are and aren't influenced yet by the stereotypes and prejudices of someone's skin color and race. Were you surprised how easy 'Guess Who' can be to win? I know what you may be thinking 'cause I just thought of it too but who cares? The odds are pretty good that your opponent won't have Anne and the game will be as long as you remember it to be as a child. But I guess the point is, again, is that a first round question many children will ask? Will they ask about glasses or maybe gender before they think of race? Interesting...
Are kids over thinking or not? Why do children seem to think so innocently when they are younger and how do they learn the stereotypes and prejudices around us? Parents? Classmates? Books? Friends? Television? Video games?...??
I don't think they are over thinking at all. I think that they are seeing the differences in people that they should be comparing (just as long as it doesn't turn into "dumb blonde" or "nerd with glasses" although it probably will someday.) Could it be that as parents are teaching their children they may focus on hair color, eye color, maybe the shapes on the faces (big or small) but they don't mention pigment of skin? Is this something that children just don't notice? I know I watched the Cosby Show and Family Matters when I was younger and didn't notice they were a different race than me until I was older.
Anyway, I just thought this was kind of interesting to think about and wanted to share. I suppose this is more "entertainment" but it is a little "political" too so...umm...entertainment...I'll place it there I guess. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed it and it made some sense. :-)
