I get many e-mails from people about our not being on satellite or cable with our digital and HD programming.  As hard as I try to help people understand why we will not simply give these businesses our digital signal and content for free, it is almost impossible to make people feel OK with our position.  But I had a personal experience over the weekend that got me excited.  I had to purchase my first HD set.  My 12 year old big screen which still had a great picture had a broken screen.  In order to fix the screen it would have cost $500.00.  So I decide to purchase a new set.  This particular set (like all of the new HD sets today) has a built in digital tuner.  I decided to locate my old indoor antenna that I purchased from a local electronics store for about 35 bucks and screw it into the back of the set.  I set the input on "antenna" instead of cable, turned on Ch 51 (our digital channel number), and within seconds I was watching FOX 11 in HD over the air and for free!  Couldn't have been easier.  For anyone looking to get FOX 11 in HD, if you have a set with a built in digital tuner, try this.

I have recently purchased a HD TV and got HD receiver from DirecTv. Fox11 looks very blurry compared to any other local channel. Is that Fox or what?

So, when the big switch happens in 2009 will you be forced to give Time Warner and the satellites your HD feed? My guess is that nothing will be resolved before 2009 and then it will be resolved for you.

So, you have no problem with people receiving your HD signal over the air for free, but won't allow people to receive it over cable for free? Your logic confuses me. People subscribe to cable not only for more station choices, but conveniences such as DVR, as well. That won't work with your over-the-air solution.

From what I have read, your stance is that it is not fair for cable companies to rebroadcast your signal for free, while they pay others, such as ESPN. When a Packer decides to hold-out for more money and misses games, do you think the fans feel sorry for him? Not really. They would much rather see him play AND work things out.

Your stance continues to shun customers everyday that this hold-out continues. When I search for something to watch, I always first scan the HD signals. Guess which station gets skipped.

Same here, I don't watch much non-HD channels due to the quality compaired to the HD channels. Maybe the advertisers on that station should hear about us not watching the channel because of them not offering it to us in HD.

If the cable company wants to rebroadcast the local channels in HD they can pay for the signal just like they do with every other channel. The cable company will charge me $10.00 extra per month to get the local channels in HD, so why can't they use some of the that money to buy the signal they are selling. I don't think the local broadcast stations need to be in the business of helping the poor little cable companies make more profit. They can figure out how to make a profit on their own without wanting to charge a fee for rebroadcasting a signal that they get for free.

Why should we buy an HD Antenna when Cable and Satelite providers pay for all my equipment. Most people already have cable or satelite and you want them to buy equipment. You guys are being greedy and want cable and satelite providers to pay for your government mandated signal upgrades. I set my Directv DVR to record 4 shows on CBS, 9 on NBC, I avoid shows on fox because they are blurry and have poor sound. Does the Fox national network agree with the way you are treating your viewers?

I realize that it may be easy to get the FOX 11 in HD in The valley but in Fond du Lac not so easy. Also why should I buy an antenna thats why I pay for cable.

Jay you have many customers that would love to watch fox in hd, beacuse they like fox for sports, news and other shows. Why is it that you want to make it difficult for them to watch tv??? These are your customers....It is a big inconvience to not only hook up an antenna but also to switch signals on your tv just to watch it. People want things simple if something is easy to do many more people will do it. THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHICH ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS...

It is clear to me when I read these just how confusing this issue is to people. That is what I meant when I said that it is not possible to get people to feel good about our position. Yesterday I tried to get WFRV in HD over the air. Entered Ch 39 into my set (set for antenna) and there it was. WFRV in HD over the air. It takes me a matter of less than a minute to switch from cable to antenna and get our digital and HD signal over the air. Why is this option to those of you who really want HD so difficult?

I believe you've had numerous chances to explain your position on this matter. Your customers aren't idiots. If you feel that nobody understands your position, then maybe this is the time and place straighten things out, instead of just making the excuse that nobody will understand.

As much as you think your customers don't understand, I believe you don't understand your customers.

There is no confusion on the part of the customers. We know what is going on. It is a dispute between two greedy companies. We also are fully aware that we are the ones that are marginalized through this process.

You seem to be the one that is confused.

What is so hard to understand that WE don't want to have to buy additional equipment to receive what we get for FREE from the other stations. What about those Time Warner customers that want to record House in HD? How do they do that? Having an antenna and a HD tuner won't help you there.

As more and more people purchase HD sets you will see more and more customers upset with Fox11. I don't think that you realize that you may be losing customers that you will never get back. I know that I have personally boycotted your news broadcasts (and most of your regular programming). Because of this I have settled into watching other channels for my local news. You have lost me permanently as a customer for your local news broadcast. How many people are you willing to lose?

Mr. Zollar,
What is the status of the digital signal strength for WLUK 11? Currently the digital signal from WLUK is approx 50% less than Ch's 2, 5, 26, 38, & 30% weaker than Ch 14. I have asked dealers in the Oshkosh area, they indicate the strength of the signal from WLUK is not as great as the other stations. I am more than willing to accept the OTA signal but it needs to be of equal quality and strength of the other Green Bay stations. What is the future plan to increase signal strength?

Thanks.

Yea you'll generally need a stronger antenna to receive the signal if you're in the Valley or Oshkosh, many of which would require mounting on the roof or in the attic and I'm sorry but that's just not worth it to me for one station. you can go to http://www.antennaweb.org and see what kind of antenna they recommend for you though. So in my opinion, the solution is not as easy as you say Mr Zollar. I will just choose to watch one of the other stations until it's available to me through cable, the only thing I really watch Fox for is the Packer games anyways. Unfortunately in these kinds of situations it is us the customers who suffer.

I'm glad to see the viewers here are so intelligent, but unfortunately the vice-president of WLUK just doesn't get it. I've had email exchanges back and forth with Mr. Zollar, and he simply refuses to understand the good reasons that many of the people on this post are giving.

JAY: once again, I say to you (for about the 12th time): Many of your viewers cannot get Over-the-Air signals, even with a massive 200 dollar rooftop antenna. I know, because I have one, and only on very nice sunny days do I get FOX's signal. I live near Oshkosh (Ripon, actually).

So, guess what? Like all of the other viewers on here: I rarely watch FOX now!! I want to, but I don't, because the FOX cable signal is horrible, and ABC and CBS look so sweet that I don't even care if I"m suddenly watching a show I don't normally watch. So, guess whose advertisements I'm watching? Not FOX's.

Get with it, FOX! THe other networks have provided their HD signal to the cable companies for well over 3 years now! All this is doing is making FOX look really bad and greedy, which it clearly is.

Your analogies to ESPN and other cable only networks is completely faulty. I can't understand why you continue to use that argument. ESPN is not a broadcast network. Nowhere is it free. It's a bad analogy!! Get over it: ESPN can charge cable companies, and you can't.

Do you want to lose viewers? According to this forum, it sounds like many people have stopped watching FOX because of this issue. Keep it up, and let's see what happens to your advertising dollars when local advertisers figure

Maybe you will understand how much it bothers us about fox 11 not giving us what we want when we start calling the companies that advertise on your station, and letting them know we are going to stop shopping at their stores and businesses.

I'm very disappointed in Ch 11 for not offering HD programming like the other networks. I just got a new HD TV and I simply won't watch Ch 11 until it is available in HD. I have to think there are a lot of people like me and that won't make the advertisers very happy.

Mr. Zollar:
Let me give you some additional perspective on the HD/Cable issue.

I have a significant amount invested in a home theater that uses a DLP projector to display HD images on a 102" screen in my basement. To get broadcast images I use a cable box, because there is no TV tuner in the projector. I can easily switch to satellite, but not "over the air". When I view HD content broadcast on WFRV-DT, WBAY-DT, WPNE-DT, WGBA-DT, etc., the picture quality is AWESOME! In addition, the sound that comes across in this spectrum, when played through my sound system really adds to a great entertainment experience!

When I tune to channel 12: WLUK/FOX (on the TIme-Warner-Fox Cities system), the picture quality on this set-up is frankly AWFUL... not to single out WLUK, but any standard defintion, analog broadcast looks bad in this set-up.

So, it's no surprise which content we watch... and it's not WLUK. Which is too bad, because I think there is some quality content available on FOX. But in the end, it's about an overall entertainment experience. I line in Appleton and would be happy to have you drop by to see what this experience is all about!

As far as the economics go, I pay $6.95/month for "HD Access". This has not changed, even though the number of HD channels available is increasing monthly! So, when WLUK-DT is added, the cable company will not get one penny more from me, the consumer. So, I'm having difficulty following your logic.

I also remember when cable was starting to take hold and grow, the networks and local affiliates lobbied hard to get le

Mr Zollar-
You have an issue here that has a lot of people irritated. It is my opinion that you should be working to resolve this. Let me provide you with some advice. You have posted 2 entries here and neither shows me your concern about this, nor do you express any effort to work to a resolution. You are taking a very strong arm approach. To be honest, I feel alienated by your companies self serving policy regarding providing digital/hd to cable/satellite providers. On top of that, you have shared a very negative approach to this. Your competitors are being accommodating. I am monitoring this as close as I can, and I can assure you our viewing of FOX TV has diminished due to this. Your only saving grace is that you carried a strong majority of the Packer games.

Not everyone in your market can throw up a $40 antenna and get signal. Again you are alienating me with your ignorance. Here in Fond du Lac it will take a considerable amount more. Expensive, large outdoor antennas, pre-amps, etc.

I do not like paying extra to these companies for HD in particular. BUT all you are doing is justifying this and asking for your share.

Packer season is coming to a close so I do not foresee me watching any more of your programming till next year. Also, I will be sharing my opinion of your position with your advertisers I patronize and do business with. Remember, the only victims to this are your consumers and your advertisers, and without them, WLUK does not exist.
